Overall Rating: 7.7/10

"Dark Times" album shows Vince Staples's true style and writing as an artist. He isn't a typical rapper and some of his songs aren't anything crazy or a party banger. But sometimes simplicity is the key. Staples has always been a breath of fresh air from the big rap scene and has songs that are meant to be laid back and thoughtful. While I would prefer, his previous albums, ("RAMONA PARK BROKE MY HEART" and self-titled "VINCE STAPLES"), "Dark Times" has some great tracks such as "Radio" and "Shame on Devil" with their gloomy melodies (along with some sample use) sets the scene for Staples story telling. Another track that proves Staples' great storytelling is "Justin", which takes the listener on a journey of love and possible heartbreak. With the use of synth leads and pads, and a funky groove on "Little Homies," (and most of his songs) Staples writes about his personal life and experiences. Vince Staples is a very authentic rapper and is someone that I will keep listening to in the future. This album isn't too crazy, but worth a listen.
